Spoon! After a 14-year 14 year absence, Ben Edlund’s great blue bug of justice is returning to the small screen! Deadline reports that, as rumored back in 2014, Amazon Studiosand Sony Pictures Television are looking at breathing new life into the comic book hero. Although Patrick Warburton, who headlined the nine-episode live-action live action The Tick, won’t be reprising the title role, he is attached as an executive producer. Both Ben Edlund and Barry Josephson are also returning to executive produce with Edlund also writing. What’s more, the new The Tick has already cast its Arthur. Vinyl star Griffin Newman will play accountant-turned-moth-themed-superhero Arthur Everest, Everest while House of Lies‘ Valorie Curry will play his sister, Dot.
The Tick was originally created by Edlund in 1986 as a mascot for New England Comics. Edlund then brought the nigh-invulnerable justice seeker to life in The Tick’s own book two years year later. In 1994, the first The Tick series came to television as an animated half-hour half hour show which ran for two seasons and 36 episodes. All but two of those episodes have been released on DVD. However, citing “creative considerations,” “The Tick vs. The Mole Men” and “Alone Together” were omitted from their respective DVD sets.
In 2001, FOXdebuted the live-action The Tick series with a pilot episode directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. Despite being cancelled after only nine episodes, The Tick has remained a cult hit.
The new The Tick will feature a pilot episode helmed by Transcendence‘s Wally Pfister. Check back for additional casting announcements as soon as they become available.
